Bert's Family and Friends

Bert Heitman spent his 26th birthday in the hospital due to vision issues that made everything look like a Ferris wheel. A couple of weeks later, just before his second child was born, he was diagnosed with MS. Nearly 35 years later, Bert continues to stay positive about the advancements in MS research and is supported by a large network of friends and family. Bert is one of seven in a very close-knit family. About 30 years ago, his siblings had the idea to start a group called 'Bert's Family and Friends Fighting MS' and participated in several Walk MS and Bike MS events. In 2002, his family hosted the first Great Crappie Caper at Mark Twain Lake, a family-focused fishing tournament. On May 18-19, 2024, Bert's Family and Friends hosted its 21st Great Crappie Caper, raising $16,000 for the MS Society. While the event has evolved over the years, the intent has remained the same: bring friends and family together to raise money, fish, and have a great time together.

MS Charity Pickleball Tournament

The sixth annual MS Charity Pickleball Tournament presented by the Surprise Pickleball Association took place in March of this year. Five years ago, Annie and Jim Kloss were celebrating their new marriage when Annie received an MS diagnosis. Avid pickleball players who held their wedding ceremony on a pickleball court, Jim and Annie took on this health challenge by applying their passion for the sport to help others affected by MS in Arizona. The 2024 event raised a record $24,162!
